The cannabis research community bid a sad farewell, last week, to a courageous and inspiring young lady.
Charlotte Figi, age 13, was the face of therapeutic cannabis research for epilepsy. Charlotte suffered from Dravet Syndrome and she experienced unrelenting seizures, as often as every 30 minutes, until she began utilizing CBD. Almost immediately, she went seven full days without a seizure. This improvement was long lasting. Charlotte’s vivacious personality, and the courage of her family, raised the awareness of many “doubters”. Dr. Sanjay Gupta recorded a video explaining how Charlotte opened his eyes and caused him to embrace the therapeutic use of CBD, when he had previously dismissed it. Charlotte’s brave suffering was the foundation that supported a global movement. The advances that were achieved through her illness, will improve the lives of countless children and adults worldwide. A specific high CBD, low THC cannabis strain was named in her honor. Our sincere condolences go out to Charlotte’s family and to all who knew and loved her. She passed away after a month long illness, complicated by pneumonia. While farewells are always difficult, Charlotte’s light will continue to shine brightly. Her legacy lives on in cannabis research labs, in numerous families whose children are benefitting from CBD, and in the ongoing advancements that continue to be made in the therapeutic application of this important plant. Charlotte continues to inspire us to make a positive difference in the lives of millions around the globe. Shining her light, Charlotte will always be our CBD Angel. by Paula Vetter RN, MSN, FNP
